For the End of Misogyny

For the End of Misogyny

Today I am going to rant about misogyny.

According to Google Misogyny is defined as

spelled: mɪˈsɒdʒ(ə)ni

noun

dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women.

“she felt she was struggling against thinly disguised misogyny”

mid 17th century: from Greek misos ‘hatred’ + gunē ‘woman’.

It refers to simple hatred of woman.

It has been prevalent from ancient times. I wonder what women did back then to agonize these men, that they invented a word to describe their hatred of women. This hatred has only been increasing over time. Misogyny panned into various forms of hatred for women. Facing sexist people every day, being denied education, income being reduced and being judged for basically every single damn thing (excuse my language).

If a man does anything, he can get away with it. If a woman does something, God forbid isn’t okay’ed by the society, she must be punished for it.

I’m talking about the society’s double standard here.  Women face double standards every day now when it comes to education, prejudice, exclusion, patriarchy etc.

Women in the United States weren’t allowed to vote until the 1920’s and this is one of the most developed countries in the world. And even in Europe and UK, they weren’t allowed till the late 1910’s. The US gained freedom on July 4th, 1776, but women didn’t get it until the 1920’s. And still, society has found new ways to show their hatred towards women. Eve teasing, name calling, sexual abuse, verbal abuse at work, at the place of study, at public places, and sometimes even at holy places have become so prevalent and no one even tries to stop it.

This has to stop! But who will take the necessary steps?

Who will stand up for all these injustices done towards women?

It’s YOU! And it’s YOU! AND YOU AND EVERY SINGLE PERSON, who has a mother, sister, daughter or a wife. Everyone has to stand up towards equality and end misogyny.

And more importantly, women have to stand up for each other. This is not the time to show your jealousy. This is not the time to stamp another woman out. This is not the time to hate another woman. This is the time to be together. This is the time the world should come together. This is the time every woman stands up for one another and push each other ahead for the betterment of the world. And also we should be able to stand up for ourselves. Just because we are different doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stand up.

Teasing is NOT okay. Calling women names is NOT okay. Objectifying women is NOT okay. Touching a woman is NOT okay. ‘She was asking for it,’ is NEVER okay.

And getting rid of misogyny doesn’t just make it better for women. It’s actually better for men too.

This is quite a vast topic and cannot be covered with a few words and in one day. But change should start somewhere. The hope is that women everywhere should stand up for themselves. Women should stand up for what’s true. Stand up for equality. We are equals and not subordinate.

And if we don’t stand up for ourselves, no one else will.

Love,
Pooh
