The Sine Wave
Today I want to discuss a lighter topic – the effects of romcoms on women. Watching romcoms is like a sine wave. You get the highest crest while watching them and then the lowest trough once you are done. In fact, blood flows through arteries, very much like a sine wave, where the amplitude is the maximum blood flow, and the frequency is the heart rate.
So, when we know that romcoms are just that, why do we watch them?
Because you get this high after watching these feel-good movies like you can conquer the world because the protagonists have found love. You feel like you can find that moment of bliss with your partner and sometimes even if you don’t have one, hoping for the ‘one’ in the future. Sometimes, romcoms even help you move on.
So, why do we watch these movies when we know that they are a work of fiction?
Because these tricky movies know how to make the leading lady portray the next-door-neighbor-woman. You will find yourself relating to the Meg Ryan’s, the Sandra Bullock’s or the Julia Robert’s portrayal in the movies. In their triumph, lies your satisfaction, happiness, joy, and tears. But beware, just like a wave, it will leave you with a feeling high followed by a sudden dip in your enthusiasm caused by wearing off. It might leave you feeling blue.
Well, those are the effects, which are experienced by some women, including me.
But why do we keep watching them anyway? Because we secretly want a happy ending in our lives. Even though we accept it as just fiction, it provides you an outlet, to live in a fantasy world for those brief 90 mins. It might be one of the available cures to a heartache along with an ice cream. Imagine sitting in a cozy chair, wrapped up in a blanket, watching Bill Pullman make gooey eyes at Sandra Bullock (While You Were Sleeping is one of the best romcoms there is and please do not argue), while you go through a breakup. It might not help you move on but sure keeps you distracted and wishing you were Sandra Bullock.
I can go on and on about this, but Po gave me a word limit.
So in conclusion, though romcoms give us the high and then get us depressed, they are a work of fiction so should be watched in moderation.
Happy watching and do not forget to list out your favorite romcoms and the ones we shouldn’t ever miss.
